A smart
nightlight: nightlight, flashlight and battery-backup lighting during a power
outage. Slim, modern design means it doesn’t cover both outlets when plugged in
the top outlet. Operation: When plugged into the charging base while
there is low or no lighting, the nightlight provides just the light you need. When
off the charging base, the RZNLWE-590 light can be used as a “Torch Light” or
“Flashlight”, by simply pressing the operation button once or twice to toggle
light modes. Power-Out Light: The RZNLWE-590 will turn on when power loss is
detected, allowing easy access to the flashlight. Power Saving: The RZNLWE-590
light will completely turn off when light is detected while plugged-in, to
conserve power and battery.

what is the life expectancy of the unit and are the rechargeable batteries replaceable?

This unit comes with a built in li polymer battery. IT would not be able to have the batteries replaced.
